Miles Morland Foundation offers writing scholarships [Africa]

The Miles Morland Foundation (MMF) addresses the financial challenges faced by emerging writers with its annual Morland Writing Scholarships. These scholarships provide African writers the opportunity to dedicate time to completing the first draft of a full-length book.

Scholarship Details

  • Grant Amount: £18,000, disbursed monthly over a year.
  • Additional Support: Non-fiction projects needing extra research time may receive extended support for up to eighteen months.
  • Monthly Requirement: Submit 10,000 new words to the Foundation.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Eligibility:
    • Writers born in Africa or with both parents born in Africa.
    • Writing in English.
  • Application Requirements:
    • Published excerpt of 2,000-5,000 words.
    • Description of the proposed work (400-1,000 words) for a new, full-length book (at least 80,000 words).
  • Shortlisted Candidates:
    • Must provide a 3,000-4,000 word chapter of the proposed book.

Scholar’s Undertaking

  • Monthly Submission: Submit at least 10,000 new words each month.
  • Revenue Donation: Donate 20% of any revenue from the book (including film rights and serializations) to the MMF.
