How KRA’s Online Auction Benefits the Common Mwananchi

The Kenya Revenue Authority’s (KRA) recent launch of an online auction system marks a significant development that promises to benefit the common mwananchi in several ways, compared to the traditional physical auction process.

Transparency:

The introduction of the online auction system enhances transparency in the bidding process. Common citizens can now have confidence that the auction process is fair and devoid of any hidden agendas, making it more accessible and appealing for them to participate.

Accessibility:

Unlike physical auctions, which often required individuals to be physically present at specific locations, the online auction platform allows people from all corners of Kenya, and even Kenyan expatriates abroad, to participate. This increased accessibility ensures that more common citizens can engage in auctions, opening up opportunities that were previously out of reach.

Speed and Convenience:

The online platform offers a faster and more convenient process compared to the traditional auctions. Common citizens can bid from the comfort of their homes or workplaces, eliminating the need for long journeys and time-consuming processes. This convenience encourages more people to participate in auctions.

Reduced Costs:

With online auctions, common citizens can save on various costs associated with attending physical auctions, such as transportation, accommodation, and time off work. This reduction in costs makes it financially more feasible for ordinary Kenyans to participate and potentially acquire items of interest.

Increased Revenue for Government:

The success of the online auction system means increased revenue for the government, which can then be reinvested in public services and infrastructure projects that directly benefit common citizens. This revenue can contribute to the improvement of essential services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

Economic Opportunities:

As more common citizens participate in online auctions, there is the potential for economic opportunities to emerge. Small businesses and entrepreneurs can use the platform to acquire goods at competitive prices, stimulating economic growth and job creation.

Reduced Congestion and Efficiency:

By streamlining the auction process, the online platform contributes to the efficient clearance of cargo, which can lead to reduced congestion at ports. This, in turn, can have a positive impact on the prices of imported goods, benefiting the common mwananchi by potentially lowering the cost of living.

This online auction move comes on the heels of a successful pilot phase of the online auction, during which KRA managed to collect an impressive sum of Kshs 37.5 million.

Speaking during the launch, KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Watanga said, “All members of the public are eligible and must have a KRA PIN number.”

Common items that are on auction range from cars, and electronics to furniture and much more.
